We also feel we have much to offer every student. Our teachers are highly engaged in professional learning communities. Each grade level has set essential learning goals for their grade level. They have also written common assessments to determine if the children have met these learning goals. The children who need more support are given additional learning support each day in math and language arts. The children who master the learning goals are given opportunities for enrichment each day. Because of the laser light focus we have on learning at Westridge, we have seen an increase in children being able to read, write, and do mathematics on grade level. This is thrilling to all of us involved in the process. Our Utah State Core Reference Tests (CRTs) have risen. In the 2007-2008 year we had 94% of our students pass the language arts CRT and 91% of our student pass the mathematics CRT.
Westridge also believes in educating the whole child. We are in our 6th year of the Fine Arts program in 5/6th grades. We have had an overwhelming positive response to the program from students and parents. It is a joy to attend their performances and see the growth the children have made in the fine arts area. Our ballroom dance team won two competitions last year along with many individual awards. Each area of the arts makes a difference in the children’s lives. We have added two new classes this year, guitar and an additional arts class, that are going well. We appreciate all those who give their time and expertise for children to experience the arts.
At Westridge we believe in celebrating the good things accomplished by teachers and students. Each month we have a celebration assembly where students and teachers are honored. Each teacher nominates two students per month for the Westridge Outstanding Wildcat (WOW) Award. Those students receive a bracelet stating they make a difference, a pencil and a certificate explaining why they outstanding. The winning names are put in a draw
