Special to the Herald Pony Express Days has hit Eagle Mountain and residents are rearing to go for the weekend’s festivities. The celebration commemorates the days when Pony Express riders would gallop through the area to deliver mail. Pony Express Days events are a throwback to the Wild West with plenty of outdoor adventures and a salute to local heroes. Eagle mountain held its first pony express days celebration in June 1998, only two years after the city was first incorporated. It began as a small two-day celebration with a few activities, and now stretches over two weeks, with new events being added every year. “It gets bigger every year. We try to add new events and add things that will not only be interesting to city residents but also to the regional residents so they can come see what Eagle Mountain is all about,” said Linda Peterson, the community relations coordinator for Eagle Mountain. It is easy for an event to get lost with so many cities in Utah County holding annual celebrations every summer. Eagle Mountain has risen to the challenge and is introducing several new events and themes that will show area residents Pony Express Days isn’t just another celebration. For the first time ever, Pony Express Days has an overarching theme to define its events. The city will be honoring military heros and their families by giving back to the community. “Due to the large military population in our city, we felt it appropriate to honor the armed forces during our annual celebration,” said Eagle Mountain Mayor Heather Jackson. “We appreciate the sacrifice of these men and women from our community.” The Youth Dance and Bonfire on Friday night — from which one dollar of every ticket will be donated to the Utah Veterans Memorial Park — kicked off Eagle Mountain’s tribute to the troops. The first full day of events was Saturday, which featured the first Pony Express Charity Motorcycle Ride. Proceeds from the ride will benefit the city’s military care package project and the Utah Veterans Memorial park. Awards, concerts and other events will keep the focus on honoring the troops. This year’s Tribute to a Hero Award will honor an Eagle Mountain resident who personifies the sacrifice of military wives and family, according to Peterson. The U.S. Air Force Band, Max Impact, and the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard Drill Team will perform a free concert at Nolan Park on Thursday . Daryl Worley and Josh Gracin will be the highlight performers for the Tribute to Our Troops Concert on Saturday. New to this year’s celebration is the city’s first skate park tournament, the grand opening of the Eagle Mountain Bike Park, Family Fun Night with a free comedy show starring Las Vegas’s Jason Hewlett, family bike ride and a motorcycle ride. Of course, no annual city celebration would be without its traditions and Pony Express Days will still have its parade, 5K run, pancake breakfast, carnival and much more. A lot of the events are geared toward people who are trying to watch their budgets and will feature free admission and prizes.More information about specific events is available online at www.emcity.org or is available at the city office. Utah County’s first free bike park, designed and built completely by volunteers, will have its grand opening today from 4-7 p.m., bringing together mountain-bike enthusiasts of all ages from across the state.
The Mountain Ranch Bike Park at Eagle Mountain features three downhill trails, a jump line, a pump track and a skills area where riders of all levels of experience can hone their skills. “We wanted to build a park that would allow for skill progression and appeal to a wide variety of riders,” said Cougar Hall, who worked with fellow Eagle Mountain resident Darin Garrett to conceptualize and guide the development of the park over the last two years. Local bike shops will be on site during the grand opening doing giveaways and providing demo bikes for anyone who would like take a trial spin though the park. The park, which sits on a 20-acre utility easement, was built in cooperation with the local HOA, citizens of Eagle Mountain, The City of Eagle Mountain and the Wasatch Area Freeride Trails Association — making it a unique partnership between city government, private industry, a nonprofit organization and volunteers. Hall and Garrett first thought of pursuing building a park after they vacationed in Canada. Recently, bike parks have been springing up in communities across the country from Boise, Idaho, to Boulder, Colorado, to Park City. Similar to the movement to build municipal skate parks, cities are now increasingly considering bike parks, putting Eagle Mountain on the cutting-edge of this latest recreation innovation. “The bike park is a great destination for an afternoon of riding that the whole family can enjoy. It’s a great addition to an already fantastic community,” Garrett said. But Hall and Garrett see the bike park as much more than a recreation destination. “Parks of this type offer communities, and especially young people, an opportunity for fitness outside of traditional activities like youth baseball and soccer. Our hope is that the bike park will introduce the next generation to a healthy and fun pursuit that they can enjoy into adulthood.” said Hall. Garrett added, “It’s been great to see kids in the community get excited about the park. It is clear that there was a need for a park like this in our area.” The bike park is free to the public, open from dawn to dusk each day, and will be maintained by the City of Eagle Mountain with the continued help and support of local bikers. For more information or to get directions to the park, which is located at 3450 Golden Eagle Road, Eagle Mountain, visit www.mountainranchbikepark.com.
