Payson Jr. High School will receive a $3,000 grant from the 100% For Kids Credit Union Education Foundation during a check presentation at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 10, in Room B-12 at the school, located at 1025 S. Highway 198.
Lynette Ethridge, biology and science teacher at the school, plans to use the grant money to purchase new, cordless microscopes for use by 7th grade science and 9th grade biology students at Payson Jr. High. “I know that students learn by seeing and doing,” she writes in her grant application. “In 7th grade science, a major part of the core is studying cells. This is very difficult to do with poor microscopes, and the fact that we don’t have enough for students to use or the space to use them.” But Ethridge explains that “with the new, cordless microscopes, we will be able to set them up on the student tables, and there will be plenty of room for the students to view and learn.” Upon review of her application, the 100% For Kids Credit Union Education Foundation advisory board decided to award the school $3,000 so that new, cordless microscopes with rechargeable batteries could be purchased. The 100% For Kids Credit Union Education Foundation was founded by Utah’s Credit Unions in 2002 in order to provide much-needed funds to Utah classrooms. Funds are contributed by credit unions, credit union members, and anyone committed to improving education in Utah. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded more than $5 million to schools in each of Utah’s 40 school districts. This quarter, the 100% For Kids Credit Union Education Foundation will award more than $65,000 to Utah schools. One-hundred percent of donations made to the 100% for Kids Credit Union Education Foundation reach Utah classrooms; not one cent is spent on administrative costs. To make a donation or apply for a grant, please contact Foundation Coordinator, Liz White, at 1805 S. Redwood Road, Salt Lake City, UT 84104, call (801) 887-2329, or visit: www.100percentforkids.org.
