Catherine Winters of Lindon, Utah, won top honors at the Music Teachers National Association Junior Woodwind Competition. Winters, a 12-year-old seventh-grader at Oak Canyon Junior High in Lindon, has studied flute since age 6 and currently studies with teacher Elizabeth Weissman.

She has twice been a winner in the Utah State Fair Music Competition and the Utah MTA Concerto Competition. Winters has won first place in UFA’s sonata and concerto competitions and she has earned many superiors in the Federation Music Clubs auditions. She has soloed with the Utah Symphony and the Utah Valley Symphony. Winters also plays the piano.

The MTNA Junior Performance Competition took place March 28 during the 2009 MTNA National Conference in Atlanta, Ga. As a national competition winner, Winters received $1,000, provided by the MTNA Foundation Fund. The three-tiered MTNA competitions begin at the state level. First-place winners of each state’s competition advance to a division competition. Division winners compete in the national finals.
