Locals will ‘Harvest' the Gift of Life

Farmers Market Drives to Replenish Summertime Blood Supply

PROVO (June 3, 2009) – To ensure adequate blood supplies this summer, MountainStar Blood Services (MBS) will team up with the Provo Farmers Market to “harvest” the
Gift of Life.

The MBS bloodmobile will be at Pioneer Park every Saturday through October to accept donations. It will coincide with the farmers market held 9 am to 2 pm at 500 West 100 South, Provo.

“We see fluctuations in donor activity every summer,” said Marilyn Peralta, MBS director. “Donors are vacationing. High school and college students (a reliable resource at other times) are generally not on campus to give blood. So we need to supplement supplies with community-based mobile drives.”

MountainStar Blood Services, the oldest blood bank in Utah, needs to draw 2,500 units each month. It provides blood and blood products for seven Wasatch Front hospitals and the U.S. military.

“The local blood supply needs to be constantly replenished,” continued Peralta. “Blood has a very short shelf-life. Babies require blood collected no more than five days earlier. Others may be transfused with blood no more than 42 days old. And since only 3-5% of those eligible to give blood actually donate, we're always looking for willing participants.”

She concluded, “As we head into summer, ample blood must be on the shelves. Working with Utah Valley residents who frequent the farmers market should go a long way in helping premature infants as well as others suffering from ulcers, cancer, heart problems and similar maladies.”
