Utah Valley University’s Department of Theatrical Arts had an
impressive showing at this year’s Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival regional competition in Southern California, and now the program’s production of “Nosferatu” has been selected as the first alternate in the national competition. “Chris Clark [‘Nosferatu’ director and assistant professor at UVU] has done a brilliant job of engaging our students in all aspects of the production,” said Kathie Debenham, interim dean of the School of the Arts. “He has given them a vision of their potential and they have soared. The School of the Arts is very proud of these students and this remarkable production is just the beginning.” At the regional competition in February three of the design teams for “Nosferatu” made it individually to the design finals where they took two regional awards and a merit award. In addition, the regional panel created a special Honorable Mention for Ensemble Collaboration recognizing the work of the entire student design team which includes Jared Lewis for sets, Mike James for lights, Anna-Marie Johnson for costumes, Joel Petrie for video production, Logan Kendall for music composition, and Mandy Lyons and Rebekah Wilbur for makeup. The panel was so impressed with them that they strongly encouraged the students to write an article together for a design magazine detailing their process. “Over the past few years we have been working diligently to build our program and department,” said Terry Petrie, chair of the Department of Theatrical Arts. “It is exciting to see the continuing achievements of our faculty, staff and especially our students. It validates our work and the direction of our program.” Petrie also said a number of students from other schools asked about getting into UVU’s graduate program. “If only we had one,” Petrie said. “Many of the top schools competing at the festival are six-year programs. The fact that UVU has done so well is even more impressive considering the program has only been offering bachelor’s degrees for three years.”
